The 12 Steps of NA

  1. We admitted that we were powerless over our addiction—that our lives had become unmanageable. Accepting the extent of addiction is the first step toward recovery.
  2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. Members find hope and strength in spirituality or collective support.
  3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him. Surrendering control helps to focus on recovery rather than relapse.
  4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. Self-reflection identifies patterns and behaviors that contribute to addiction.
  5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs. Sharing flaws relieves burden and promotes honesty.
  6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character. Willingness to change paves the way for personal growth.
  7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings. Emphasizes acceptance and humility in the recovery process.
  8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all. Taking responsibility for past actions fosters healing.
  9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others. Restoring relationships strengthens community support.
  10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it. Ongoing self-monitoring prevents relapse.
  11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him. Spiritual growth supports lasting recovery.
  12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs. Service to others reinforces commitment and community healing.

This structured approach motivates members across Illinois, Cook, and Chicago toward positive change and sustained sobriety.
